I am glad to say that Danny was right, and after my ear had grown accustomed to the American accent-- or rather, to some of the many accepts, because people sound different in every part of the United States-- I had no more real communication problems. However, my eye never managed to accept the American spelling of words like 'theatre' and centre' with -er at the end instead of -re, or 'colour and neighbour' with -or instead of the British -our. But I just had to accept that my idea of correct spelling simply don't apply here.

In fact, I had to re-think my whole concept of 'correct English' and the more I studied my language, its history and its use, the more I became aware that there never has been such a thing as 'standard, correct English'. English has been growing and changing continuously in the 1500 years that it has been in existence. In the 18th century a number of scholars attempted to set up and English Academy and decide what should be called 'correct English'. But there wasn't much support for their idea, and it proved impossible for the language to be fixed and standardized. Today it is generally accepted that the right way to use a word is the way it sis commonly used, and that the right way to pronounce it is the way it commonly pronounced. So if the Americans say 'firs floor' and the British say 'ground floor', then both meanings are correct, and they appear side by side in the dictionary. Although a hundred years ago a great Oxford linguist predicated that by today the English, the Americans and the Australians would be speaking mutually unintelligible languages, this has fortunately not really turned out to be true.
